Use Discernment When Asking Questions—Part 1
1. Why are questions such powerful tools for our ministry?
1 Questions are powerful tools for the ministry. They can be used to arouse interest, reason on a subject, emphasize a point, and encourage active thinking. Jesus used questions extensively to teach others.—Matt. 17:24-27; 26:52-54.
2. Why is discernment needed when asking questions?
2 While questions are important, discernment is needed. Some deaf people may not have had a formal education or were not raised in an environment where questions were used. Therefore, questions directed to them could make them feel uncomfortable or even apprehensive. How can we avoid this?
3. What can we do to ease a householder’s apprehension regarding questions?
3 Create a relaxed atmosphere: When asking questions, do so in a kind manner. Do not give the householder the impression that he is being tested. Wait and truly listen to his response. (Matt. 22:42) Be kind rather than critical when acknowledging his response. Offer sincere commendation when appropriate. (Mark 12:34) When offering to visit again, explain that your goal is to have an enjoyable interchange regarding the Bible and its wonderful hope.—Rom. 1:12.
4. What should we do before making a return visit or conducting a Bible study?
4 Prepare beforehand: Before making a return visit or conducting a Bible study, prepare the information with the student in mind, paying special attention to the questions. Some students respond better if you sign the questions yourself rather than playing the video. Therefore, take note of key signs in the question that relate to the paragraph so that you can emphasize these signs during the discussion.
5. What suggestions may help students get the most benefit from studying our publications?
5 During the visit: For some new return visits or Bible students, you might pause the video when key points are signed. This can help a student learn how to find the answer in the paragraph. While the paragraph is being signed, it may be helpful to make eye contact with the student at key points or make facial expressions at those moments to express agreement or to show it is an important point. Teach him how to study beforehand, pointing out that most questions contain signs that are similar to the signs found in the paragraph.
6. Why should we want to continue to improve in our teaching ability?
6 As we continue to improve our skill in using effective questions, we will be imitating Jesus, the Master Teacher. A future article will consider additional ways we can use discernment when asking questions.
