a In a letter to the U.S. Mint, dated November 20, 1861, Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase wrote: “No nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins.” As a result, the motto “In God We Trust” first appeared on a circulating U.S. coin in 1864.
