a The Roman poet Horace (65​—8 B.C.E.), who made the same journey, commented on the discomforts of this stretch of the trip. Horace described the Marketplace of Appius as “crammed with boatmen and stingy tavern-keepers.” He complained about the “cursed gnats and frogs” and the “villainous” water.
