7 When David heard of it, then he sent Joʹab and all the army [and] the mighty men.*+

2 Further, David sent one third+ of the people under the hand of Joʹab+ and one third under the hand of A·bishʹai+ the son of Ze·ruʹiah, Joʹab’s brother,+ and one third under the hand of Itʹtai+ the Gitʹtite. Then the king said to the people: “I myself also shall without fail go out with YOU.”

2 So the king said to Joʹab+ the chief* of the military forces who was with him:* “Move about, please, through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beʹer-sheʹba,+ and YOU men register the people,+ and I shall certainly know the number of the people.”+

15 And it came about when David struck down Eʹdom,*+ when Joʹab the chief of the army came up to bury those slain, that he tried to strike down every male in Eʹdom.+

6 So David said: “Anyone striking+ the Jebʹu·sites first, he will become head and prince.” And Joʹab+ the son of Ze·ruʹiah got to go up first, and he came to be head.
