1 That which was from [the] beginning,*+ which we have heard,+ which we have seen with our eyes,+ which we have viewed+ attentively and our hands felt,+ concerning the word of life,+

7 Beloved ones, I am writing YOU, not a new commandment, but an old commandment+ which YOU have had from [the] beginning.+ This old commandment is the word which YOU heard.

5 So now I request you, lady,* as [a person] writing you, not a new commandment,+ but one which we had from [the] beginning,*+ that we love one another.+
