18 As soon as David had finished speaking to Saul, Jonʹa·than+ and David became bound together in close friendship,* and Jonʹa·than began to love him as himself.*+

4 David asked him: “How did things turn out? Please tell me.” To this he said: “The people have fled from the battle and many have fallen and died. Even Saul and his son Jonʹa·than have died.”+

7 However, the king showed compassion for Me·phibʹo·sheth,+ the son of Jonʹa·than the son of Saul, because of the oath made before Jehovah between David and Jonʹa·than,+ the son of Saul.
