A Letter From the Governing Body

Printed Edition

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

In his message to the congregation in Smyrna, Jesus said: “Do not be afraid of the things you are about to suffer.” (Rev. 2:10) His encouragement not to give in to fear was also meant for us who are living now in “the Lord’s day.” (Rev. 1:10) These certainly are “critical times hard to deal with,” and we are deeply moved to see God’s people around the world keeping their integrity as they boldly face tests of their faith and courage!—2 Tim. 3:1-5.

A man in Bible times walking across a vast desert landscape.

How, though, can we make sure that we will remain steadfast, refusing to “shrink back” in fear? (Heb. 10:39) It may not always be easy, for we may face opposition, even persecution. Still, we will always have a choice in the matter. Whether we are shy by nature or bold, we can choose to take a courageous stand for Jehovah and for what is right. What can help?

God’s inspired Word can help you to find courage. It is full of examples of courageous men and women. This book has been prepared to help us look closely at their examples and reflect on them. As you prayerfully study such Bible accounts, think about your own situation and the challenges you face right now or may face in the future. Consider how Jehovah can help you to be courageous. Also, consider how the courage these men and women showed might embolden you in the following ways:

To make adjustments. (Jas. 3:17) When Jehovah rejected Saul and chose young David as the next king, Jonathan showed loyalty and courage, as he wholeheartedly supported Jehovah’s choice of David.

To stand up for righteous principles. (Heb. 11:32-34) Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were ready to face death in a fiery furnace rather than compromise their faith by committing an act of idolatry.

To speak up about the truth. (Matt. 22:16) Think of Saul of Tarsus, who told the truth about Jesus to the very people who were expecting him to help them persecute Jesus’ followers.

We pray that this publication will help you to grow in faith and courage. (Ps. 27:14) May Jehovah bless you as you help those in your family and in the congregation to stand up courageously in support of God’s Kingdom!

Your brothers,
