b A light-year is a unit of length equal to the distance that light travels in one year in a vacuum, or about 5,878,000,000,000 miles [about 9,461,000,000,000 kilometers]. Correspondingly, a light-minute is the distance light would travel in one minute, a light-month the distance light would travel in one month, and so forth.
