Footnote

a Although the terms “life expectancy” and “average life span” are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between the two. “Life expectancy” refers to the number of years an individual can expect to live, while “average life span” refers to the average number of years that members of a population actually live. Thus, life-expectancy estimates are based on average life spans.
