b The battle for Brazil was lost but not the Sugar War. Using know-how acquired in northeast Brazil, the Dutch set up plantations in the Antilles. Before the 17th century ended, cheap West Indian sugar had flooded the European market and broken the Portuguese sugar monopoly.
