Footnote

a The term “mummy” comes from the Arabic mummiya, which means “bitumen” or “pitch.” The term was originally given to resin-soaked cadavers because of their blackened appearance. It now applies to any preserved body—human or animal—regardless of whether the preservation is accidental or deliberate.
