a There are two subspecies of the European bison​—the lowland European bison and the Caucasian, or mountain, bison. The last Caucasian bison died in 1927. Earlier, however, another male of this subspecies was mated with lowland bison, producing hybrid offspring. A number of these mixed-breed Caucasian bison still exist.
