b Commenting on this verse, Bible translator Jerome (born in the fourth century C.E.) tells of an ancient custom observed by idolaters on the last day of the final month of their year. He wrote: “They would spread a table covered with various kinds of foods and a cup mixed with sweet wine to ensure good luck for the fertility of either the past or the coming year.”
