Brother Knorr immediately sent a call to Hawaii for Japanese-Hawaiian volunteers to come to Gilead School’s 11th class for missionary training. The Hawaii branch overseer, who had been a secretary to J. F. Rutherford in the early 1920’s, pleaded: “But, Brother Knorr, what about the Hasletts?” So the invitation was extended also to Don Haslett and his wife, Mabel, though they were close to 50 years of age.

During 1949 “the Hawaiians”—Don and Mabel Haslett, Jerry and Yoshi Toma, Shinichi and Masako Tohara and their three children, and Elsie Tanigawa—took up assignments in the bombed-out city of Tokyo.
