7. Take Precautions to Remain Chaste When Dating

(15 min.) Discussion.

Dating may generally be defined as “any social activity in which two people focus romantic interest on each other.” It can take place in a group or in private, in the open or in secret, and in person, over the phone, or by text message. We view dating, not as recreation, but as a form of courtship, a serious step toward marriage. What are some precautions that can help individuals, whether young or old, to avoid sexual immorality while dating?—Pr 22:3.

An older couple who are dating, chatting happily while enjoying a meal together at a restaurant.

Play the VIDEO Preparing for Marriage—Part 1: Am I Ready to Date?—Excerpt. Then ask the audience:

  • Why should a person not begin dating until he is ready for marriage? (Pr 13:12; Lu 14:28-30)

  • What did you appreciate about the way the parents helped their daughter?

Read Proverbs 28:26. Then ask the audience:

  • How can a couple plan ahead to avoid being alone in potentially tempting situations?

  • Why is it wise for a couple to discuss in advance clear limits on expressions of affection, such as holding hands and kissing?

Read Ephesians 5:3, 4. Then ask the audience:

  • What should a couple keep in mind about their conversations over the phone or online?
