a No specific word for “conscience” appears in the Hebrew Scriptures. However, the conscience is clearly in evidence in such examples as this one. The expression “heart” generally refers to the inner person. In such instances as this, it evidently points to a specific part of the inner man​—his conscience. In the Christian Greek Scriptures, the Greek word rendered “conscience” occurs some 30 times.
